Valentine’s Day: All You Need is Love

By Jalynn Venis, Transformational Coach

Heart BackgroundWhat do you think of when Valentine’s Day arrives? Tiny pastel, chalky heart-shaped candies that have the words “Be Mine” on them? A ruby-red Valentine card? Sex? Red roses?  A romantic dinner? More sex? Flickering candles? Sex with him? The music of love? Sex with her?

If you’re single and dating several people, perhaps you’ll wonder who you’ll go out with. Will that special someone take me out on a romantic date? Will the one I love shower me with love?

Or will I be alone and unloved? If I’m alone, will I drown my tears in a heart-shaped box of chocolates and destroy my diet to make a point, or wait until after Valentine’s Day and buy boxes of half-priced candy in the hope of committing death by chocolate?

Valentine’s Day has a way of bringing out the drama in our love lives, but it doesn’t have to. If you broaden your interpretation of what this day dedicated to love means, you’ll enjoy it more and have a richer experience of love.

It’s not just for lovers

The theme of the day is love, as in All You Need is Love (the Beatles song). But in the complex human psyche, love covers a very broad spectrum of emotion. For starters, there’s kinship, friendship, romantic desire and divine love. And sometimes these categories combine in amazing and delightful ways. Then there’s pet love, group love and self-love – and so many variations in between.

StatueYou may find it hard to believe, but Valentine’s Day is not about you. More than any other day, Valentine’s Day is for contemplating the people in your life who are special to you. It’s a day to show and tell them how much you appreciate them. Valentine’s Day is about sharing your love in as many ways as possible with those beautiful beings.

Be the love you want to experience and you’ll feel the warmth and inspiration of the day. It’s so easy to do. Make a list of those special people in your life. This might include your lover, spouse, pets, parents, siblings, close friends, favorite aunts and uncles, and cousins.

Then make a list of the other people who have contributed in a positive way to the person you’ve become: the teachers, mentors, spiritual guides, performers, singer-songwriters, authors, scientists, ancestors and others who have helped to shape your life and provide special meaning for you.

Savor and share your appreciation for these luminous souls by saying a prayer for them and thanking God or the Universe for their presence in your life and connection with you. This activity will not only fill your heart with love and energy, it will bless and strengthen your connection with every one of those souls.

And you can do more.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with anyone you love!

Tango Dancers (B&W)The point of the day is to celebrate love in its many forms, and let those you love know how precious they are to you. Here are some ways to do this:

  • Pick up the phone and call that special aunt to say, “I’m thinking of you, and I want you to know I love you.”
  • Surprise a close friend by dropping in on them for a quick visit or to take them to lunch.
  • Visit an older relative and take them on an outing or run errands for them.
  • Take a niece or nephew to a museum or an amusement park.
  • Give your pets a treat.
  • Take your dog to the park.
  • Give your cat a new toy.
  • Call your sister or brother and remind them of some of your favorite memories together.
  • Take your parents out for lunch or dinner.
  • Show yourself some love by doing something special like getting a massage, taking time for meditation, or going to the gym or park for an activity that strengthens your body and makes you feel alive.
  • Go to a multiplex theater by yourself or with a friend and see one, two or even three movies back-to-back. Remember to treat yourself to popcorn, candy and a drink while you’re there!

And of course you can always do the usual: Send Valentine’s cards, buy candy, and buy flowers for those you love, but you’ll find that doing the unusual and unexpected is a lot more satisfying.

For those of you in a relationship, do have that romantic dinner and light a candle for love. Then you can watch a favorite romantic comedy or create some romantic comedy and drama of your own.
